The background in which we grew up are the only things that make us to THINK different but not to FEEL different. We are more connected than separated and the things that separate us, are just some small things, we dont need to hold on these small things because, when we do, than that ends always with no results but hate to each other. We need more to mention what is connecting us, things like ? peace and love ❤️?. Because, things, like Peace and love are connections that are stronger, than everything that disconnect us. Every religion wants to spread peace, and it doesn’t matter if you believe in one God or 10 or on no God. We have to learn from each other and to be Harmonious to each other, that is what a religion and every normal human being wants, forget the other small things. You that is reading this, yeah you, i love you❤️?

Positive-sum game is a term that applies to the macroeconomy, but that doesn’t mean that individuals are benefited by every decision they make that has a positive effect on others. Giving away all my belongings isn’t going to help me.

By ‘positive sum game’, they meant in the context of their life experiences, their family’s, their group’s, their race’s, their nation’s, and at the very most their species’ life experiences. For they who like the word ‘positive’ in this video, may God bless you in your intergalactic ventures.

But we all know that handful of people controlling 90% of this world, who don’t want to have a cure neither want to share their wealth infact steal poor people’ wealth as much as possible without any sense of guilt or Altruism. Such a dystopian world won’t exist without extermination of such evil doers.

  20. GamingLegendary

It’s a good idea but simply theoretical, however, there are quite a few holes and issues surrounding this as many in the comments section will tell you making it not quite practical. A good solution is to provide equal opportunity for work. By equal opportunity, I don’t mean simply making it easier for those less fortunate to get higher jobs simply because they are less fortunate but instead for everyone to be able to obtain some form of job that benefits not a government but society. Western countries do this sort of job equality well, mostly limiting discrimination to the basis of skill and experience, and could do this for less fortunate countries. But offering jobs to people within those countries serve its own political issues as well does simply letting those in less fortunate countries come to that likely western country.

    Great video as always.
Well, the assumption here is that the industrial revolution will keep running. Probably, but it will get a lot harder to make progress, with resources getting more and more expensive. At some point we might hit a limit, but probably not for the next 100 years.

  22. Sentinel

But human exploitation of Earth is getting out of hand, and people are selfish. “Why should I help them? I don’t know them and they don’t benefit me” is what you usually get.

Only problem with this hypothesis, is that less than 1%  of the population of the world control 99% percent of the money. And they are not about to part from it and start distribution anytime soon. This hasn’t changed, we’ve got history as proof. This (Video and thought process) is the carrot they hang out there to get you to go to work, 40+ hours a week, without actually calling it slavery.  We in America call it the “American Dream”. We are taxed into oblivion, and scheduled to die shortly after retirement. GMO foods and pharmaceuticals ensure this. Internet Dis-informers” at work. Seems hopeless? Nope. It never actually gave an ideas. Distributing wealth doesn’t make everyone rich, it makes everyone average, then poor. In other words, no one will be able to afford cancer treatment when it is rare, and it will never develop.

If everyone was rich then would everyone then be poor? If someone says that there poor then they are saying that they are below the average wealth but everyone is at the average so is everyone, the same goes for the rich as they are higher than average. So what do we call it?

  44. CogitoErgoCogitoSum

Good pro-capitalism video. I wonder what your liberal viewers think of this. “Give me free stuff so I dont have to do anything” and “everyone else has a moral duty to give up their own earnings to feed those who wont contribute”

  45. CogitoErgoCogitoSum

The primary problem with the third world is their culture. We handed a bunch of modern tech and convenience and modern medicine to a tribal group without teaching them to breed less first. Western cultures learned to slow breeding down because we developed the tech and culture changed along the way. So when you reduce the death rates and improve the fertility and live birth rates, without reducing the breeding, you naturally get over population. These countries we thought we helped are now suffering overpopulation and poverty as a result. They dont learn. They dont learn the technology to be able to contribute to a world market and they dont learn culturally to reduce breeding.

  46. CogitoErgoCogitoSum

If the pie is bigger you dont necessarily get more. Your argument is that the pie gets bigger so everyone benefits, but in fact more people are eating it too. Even if most everyone got a bigger piece there is still no guarantee that you will.

  47. Very Ape

Capitalism doesn’t breed innovation for the bettering of society. It selects innovation that helps perpetuate it (maximizing profits) and stamps out innovation that will hurt it (like electric cars, renewable energy), or brainwashes us into thinking the innovation that will help us will actually hurt us (the economy!) until non-renewable ressources are depleted or until damage to the delicate crust we live on is irreversible. So basically, capitalism breeds innovations that will help further enrich the rich, who have long since stopped working to become parasites who make money simply by virtue of having money.

But what about all the stupid people in the world? That’s where this idea falls flat. There are places on the planet where the average IQ is 65. That is considered legally retarded in the US. Sure, improvements in nutrition and disease prevention will lift it some, but anyone under an IQ of 83 can hardly do any job at all. Any idea I can think of to make their IQ higher usually involves activities that are unthinkable in the West.

I’d also be really curious to see how this affected the shift of raw material supply and demand and how likely African countries with this newfound international political and economic leverage would handle it. My guess would be they’d decry white people, shut themselves off from the world, take the money for themselves and plunge themselves back into poverty and lack of education.

  64. ss s

The argument is simply wrong. Yeah, theoretically it’s not the zero sum game if innovation is popping everywhere. But how poor country get innovation? humanitarians investment? Hell no, no foreign government would do that for free even with that selfish ideology. Poor countries are on their own.

How do we define a better world? This video seems to only take in the human aspect but letting aside all the other species in the world. So a positive sum world from who’s perspective? I guess the title is correct in that regard.

  81. Reuben Puddephatt

I’m disapointed that there was no mention of finite resources and sustainability in relation to economic/social growth as this is one of the key factors holding us back from the utopian future described in the video.

  82. Eric Yiliqi

The case can be find on VR and AR. The technology has great demand and potential and because their prices is nowhere need affordable for general population, the developers seeks instant profit over long-term investments that builds a large enough market share to support the technology, and the well is poisoned for new comers that would support the industry in the future.

During the past few console wars it is already proven the most powerful is less likely to win, the most balanced does.

Sadly the VR product’s trend is towards better graphics at higher price which makes them more obscure, have a better chance of being an upgrade of the rich few who already have multiple devices, that contributes only manufacturers pockets instead of expanding the market size.

Long sighted market plans nowadays rarely happen in the capital games, likewise the case of curing disease vs. profit of medicine companies.

What a healthy pattern of the electronic product was in three generations to achieve conception, reducing the cost, and finally increasing performance based on reduced-to-affordable prices that can support an ecosystem. However what we see now is pure profit from day one. So two years later the question about the VR became is it dead vs. how much more immersed it can be and of course how much more expensive it will became.

Don’t get me wrong, I own the devices and I like it generally. It is of my best interest therefore to advocate so more people will buy and expand the market so better software can be created for the technology that will ensure the survival of it.

    Just like the video.

It is not only VR. MS hololens is in affordable and heavily conceptual to begin with. Even with common technology such as graphic card or cellphone, the top liner product flipped a fold in the past ten years.

  90. Haebris

This is why Brexit perplexes me so much. The richer other parts of a free trade area are, the more money they have to spend on buying things from your part of the area. Even if it’s not direct, a Polish person can buy something from a German. This gives the German more money to buy something from you. And because the same money creates larger and faster growth in less developed areas, it’s in your best interests to invest there first. It also doesn’t hurt that most European cultures are very similar outside of language. And even then over half speak English anyway if that’s your concern.

  103. Amélie Schuberth

It is a very nice idea if everyone lives in a fair retributed world and is contributing proportionally to it. But people rather look for a cheap and materialistic way of living than a really better world, they would rather consume polluting / low-quality products made in an emerging country by low paid people as long as it’s cheap and looks trendy, they don’t want really a sustainable way to consume and pay a fair price for it, i.e. fashion industry and so on.

  104. GAHHH

This idea works with a lot of strings attached. There HAS to be laws… strict ones to keep it fair.

  112. AntisepticHandwash

There is one factor that this video overlooks – _culture._ I.e., traditions and philosophies that inform human behaviour (along with individual and other factors). Traditions and philosophies can be almost anything, and as such *there is no guarantee that a given population will do any one thing – such as focusing on science and innovation in an effective way, or playing well with other populations – if they are given material wealth.*

It’s very easy for bad ideas to stifle progress, mismanagement to drive a population into the ground, and malicious intent to endanger other populations. See: overtly religious societies; virtually every communist society; and terrorist societies, respectively.

  113. Brian Wyters

    Says cake and shows pie.
    Kurz-ge-shat

  114. Joseph Alam

    Love this channel!
This argument is pretty weak though

  115. Randy Wallace

The problem with this argument is that it assumes all people are equal. I know this will trigger a lot of people, but all evidence points towards the conclusion that we are not. There is no reason to believe that two groups of people on opposite ends of the Earth kept apart for thousands of years would develop the same behavioral and intellectual qualities. For instance, the average IQ of Sub Saharan Africans is ~70, or clinically retarded by western standards. On top of that they are prone to violence and corruption. Regardless of where they are, Sub Saharan Africans commit a massively disproportionate amount of crime. No amount of foreign aid will ever give them the ability to create or even maintain a modern technologically advanced society. Trying to uplift these people will ultimately end up as an immense drain on our own resources with little if any benefit in return. If anything, our foreign aid efforts have only created more problems as the population of low IQ countries explodes when provided access to modern food production and medicine. The infrastructure of the third world is already strained by the current population while waves of migrants tear apart the social fabric of the first world that provides for them.

While western civilization is built around the ideas of “freedom” and rights for everyone other peoples of other cultures simply cannot function under these same standards. Honestly, a system of colonialism provides the best possible outcome for everyone. The western world, the place which actually drives innovation, has access to resources from everywhere else which can then be reinvested in third world colonies to provide them with a standard of living they could never achieve on their own. Obviously there are some exception, notably in East Asia, but the fact remains that a growing majority of Earths people are not suited to live in the manner proposed by this video.

    1. Aleksy The Pony

” No amount of foreign aid will ever give them the ability to create or even maintain a modern technologically advanced society.”
Despite all other things you mention this sentence is not necessarily true. Who’s to say that people with light retardation couldn’t maintain a modern technologically advanced society. It most likely would be harder but not necessarily impossible.

“While western civilization is built around the ideas of “freedom” and rights for everyone other peoples of other cultures simply cannot function under these same standards.”
Western civilization weren’t built around ideas of freedom before the industrial revolution. It is only logical that other civilizations might became “freedombased” thanks to industrial revolution the same way the west became. Also- it was a long process and industrial revolution is still very fresh in poorer countries.

As someone whose studied ancient civilizations. It is a bit of an oversimplification to say the ancient world was a zero sum game. This was true for territorial empires that relied on tribute, but from the perspective of the subsistence farmer, you were in a win-win relationship with anyone in your social/kin group, which could be small or universal depending on how you looked at it. Today we still think in terms of kin groups, but if you change how you think about it, this video is arguing that this includes everyone. For both modern and ancient cooperation makes sense based on your perspective.

  155. wesson smith

Small problem with your theory, human nature or what makes humans, human.

As you pointed out, humans have only been industrialized for a very short period of time, however our basic instincts for survival are deeply engrained. Those instincts tell use to dominate and take resources regardless of our current need. That’s why powerful countries use violence and is why other countries try to become powerful. Ideology is another human trait. We love forcing our ideology on others.

One day in the FAR OFF future we might become the type of civilization that you envision. That however will only be achieved by creatures that have been stripped of the very thing that currently makes us human now. You can’t wish away the reality that humans are animals and behave in rational and irrational ways. Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Until that is addressed none of what you envision will come to fruition.

Since to be an utopia argument… why? because it could be a lot easier to reduce, for example, weapon development, and use that money for medical purposes. Also, producing more and more, needs the other face of the coin: consumerism that lead to a society based more in material needs and less in human essential things (as personal development, happiness, meditation.. and even love…)
if we are speaking of and capitalism economy then the real beneficiary to produce and sale more are the current rich people… instead to push for an argument that increases richness of the current rich people, let’s build a society that will work for each and every one of its members. Not necessary this leads to socialism or communism, there should be a point where is a balance between individuals and community and between greed and ambition.

  159. sod-off tax-dodging gits

Nice idea, but the growth part is somewhat unrealistic. Things have only grown as much as they have on the back of cheap non-renewable energy and rapacious environmental exploitation – both of which are coming to the end of their run. It’d take a miracle to replace all those resources with sustainable alternatives. It might be just about possible, I suppose – but we are going to have to go through a hell of a bottleneck first.

Politics has already collapsed – science is about to follow, we’re plunging into a dark age of ignorance and superstition. Innovation will cease, and with it the last shreds of economic growth. Life is about to get very, very ugly as we return to that zero-sum game, dog-eat-dog universe. We have to start thinking about preserving knowlege and keeping concepts such as empiricism and the scientific method alive- like medieval monks. Sorry – Fantasies about infinite economic growth might be good for morale, but I don’t see this coming true any time soon.

  160. testythetester

    So, communism?

  161. medviation

The pie is not getting bigger, we’re just discovering how to access parts of the pie we couldn’t access before. Still the pie is ultimately finite. Nature is inherently zero sum, no matter or energy is created or destroyed.

More space, biology, and philosophy please. Less opinions and agendas please, or play the devil’s advocate like you did with nuclear energy.

  163. eccentricwriter

The logic of the video is sound but also shows a hidden, sinister truth. Since more people working on one thing makes it happen faster there is an incentive to attempt to get as many people as possible to like your ideas so that you get their productivity. So, what happens when two people have two opposing views on one thing? Lies, censorship, conflict, etc. This does not damn the idea in any way, it’s just an aspect that needs to be kept in the back of our minds so we can try to avoid the trap.

The thing is, even though working torwards a better world for everyone might benefit me in the far future a little bit, aren’t i personally better off just investing in myself. 1. Nathan Kayhan

OK, but what about limited arable land, metals, minerals, and other materials necessary for the industrial economy to operate? Unless we become significantly more resource efficient, the Earth cannot sustain its current population if all of us were to live a Western lifestyle.

    2. netwolfe

@Nathan Kayhan The hope would be that we find ways to replace them with renewable sources.Kind of like some places have been looking at the limited resource of coal power, and trying to replace them with solar and wind power. And in theory the more people we have working together on those things, the more research we will be able to develop into renewable resources.

  192. Richard Bergin

You can’t rrally do these issues justice without a deep analysis of what capitalism does, what it produces, what it requires in terms of growth, growth in pollution on a finite planet and how goods are distributed.

Those who do not know their history are doomed to repeat it…. those that do know ,are doomed to watch all the others repeat it.

    1. Roninakuma

Any historian or anyone who has a history degree can tell you, that history never repeats itself. Your whole statement is a logical fallacy based on a common misperception of a very bad and cliche quote. George Santayana was a hack.

  207. Meir Unknown

    TEACH THIS IN SCHOOLS

  208. Caroline Görtz

This is ignoring many relevant things. Like that our planet has limited resources and how people are not demanding what works with sustainablity. The system is longterm breaking down itself and the planet. There’s relevant reasons to why we have been making so many other animals extinct and even threaten animals in the sea. Nature, animals and next generations will have to pay for the many mistakes that we make today.

Go vegan. That’s the best thing you can do to be part of the sustainable development.

    1. Caroline Görtz

I don’t get where you got the idea that the mediterranian diet is sustainable. We’ve started fishing out the seas and have been “stealing fish” from african seas in order to get as much fish as we’re asking for. There are just a few changes in EU that last few years that have made it more illegal to take fish from african seas (because of a swedish EU-minister who passionatly handled the subject).

The reason that vegan diet is so much more sustainable is because it takes a lot less energy to just make and eat plant based food than it does to breed animals and create animal based foods. It could be simplified into that it takes about 10 times as much acres, water, fossil fuels, etc to eat animal products than it takes to eat plant products (I’m among other later sources mostly basing that on the food chain teachings in school).

Besides, salmon is a popular fish both in scandinavian countries and mediterranean (I don’t know about the rest of countries, but probably popular in more). Salmon is one of the least sustainable fish that we can eat.

    2. bluefisch200

Not really true. A Mediterranean diet is nearly as sustainable as vegetarian or vegan. It is not necessary to cut out meat completely.

  209. Skubaniec TSARGA

Bullshit, the world never was a zero sum game.

  210. Trevor Cilmo

This video lacks critical thinking and seems to have been lobbied: it promotes growth as an entity independent from our resources, and as if everyone would benefit from this global pie. If you’d studied something else than physics, you’d know that many humanities studies tend to show that inequalities are exploding, despite this “bigger and bigger pie”. It seems to me that you fell in techno-solutionism Kurzgesagt …
For a few months now, I had this feeling that this channel was taking over by lure of profit, not talking about thought experiments anymore but “how cool technology can be” instead. Technology is what we decide to do with it, and not presenting the social choices resulting in technology is missing a crucial argument. I’m tired of watching every two videos wondering when it’ll end, because of this lack of independence and critical thinking … too bad the graphics were cool

  211. FlashKrazy

this reminds me of the physics that Neil Degrasse Tyson and Stephen Hawking studied

REAL QUESTION: is the majority of your videos astrophysics or philosophy?

  212. chronok

This is one of the weird mechanisms why capitalism actually works somehow better than any other system that has been tried. In order for rich to get even more richer they need more consumers and more consumers means more people need to raise from poverty which happens every day to tens of thousands people. Also in order to be rich you need to innovate and you need to innovate furiously so you give oppurtunity for smart people to thrive but still poor people benefit massively from it. A poor person today owns much more and much better stuff than poor people before. By all means the world is not getting a worse place under capitalism (The sky is not falling) but actually better – there are many smart laws which regulate the competition and the externalities so it keeps the whole thing in check. Sure there has been many negative side effects and I’m not saying capitalism is perfect but against all odds and theories it still lessens poverty around the world better than anything else.

  213. Forest Tiger

I don’t know why but this reminds of communism, not the bad kind, but the ideology that everyone works together to make the world better a better place for everyone

    1. Yin

BungyStudios Hope goes a long way but yes that’s true until proven otherwise.

    2. Jacob W

ideology wise, this is pretty far away from communism. like its literally selfish altruism, where as communism is selfless service for the state, like the outcome might seem similar on the surface, but the motivations ideologies behind them are very different. also outcomes actually aren’t similar, in communism everyone “prospers” equally, which isn’t the case for this idea

    3. Frontyer

No it would not. Communism would never work even if it was computers running everything.

    4. k y l a

people who are in favor of capitalism are the ones who have belly full, since in that kind of system, only a FEW benefits from it. the workers, the farmers, the laborers, they should be the ones who are gaining from the hard work they all do. but in a system that’s designed to make the rich richer, ‘work hard’ won’t make anyone really successful.

    5. k y l a

lmao you guys obviously don’t know what capitalism is. stop talking about things you don’t really know about. is it that hard to let go of your own conditioned biases that aren’t even fact checked in the first place?

There needs to be a struggle and caste system in the world its been that way since forever not this low testosterone soy mentality. The white race has been blinded by these shit skins and there toxic belief systems.

    1. Roninakuma

You must hate Star Trek, considering a lot of the message in that is the same as this video. I pity your limited assumption that the human race can’t transcend its baser instincts in the future.

Apparently it’s a very far one though, with people like you around.

  220. M C

asia has had space programs for sometime if you remember the race to the moon 🙂 . . great video regardless

  221. Krzeszny

The problem with cancer is that the more people pay for research, the more profitable it is to patent cures and never use them. Which is what’s been happening for decades. Capitalism.

    1. Krzeszny

What would happen to doctors and pharmacists if a cure for all diseases was revealed to the public? It’s not going to happen. It’s been happening many times. And it hasn’t.

Watch “Cream by David Firth” here on YouTube.

    2. Krzeszny

And here’s an example of modern supply and demand: the more people need medicine, the more the pharmaceutical concerns earn. The more people need chemotherapy ()which is the most profitable branch of the pharmaceutical industry)… you get the point.

  222. Jim Deferio

    “egoistic altruism”.
OK, and I’m very proud about how humble I am.

  223. Jose Mendoza

There is a lot of “as things grow people can pay” but Karl Marx is still correct in the sense that we don’t really own any of these things and more over human nature is to cut corners, find deals, and bargains; so unfortunately people at the top will always try to under sell or under cut his/her/its workers for the sake of profit.

So because we want to continue being rich, the pie will never truly be equal and people will never really feel like they are following their dreams.

This is a worse fairy tale than the bible. Its all hypothetical but in practice it does not happen.

you know i am surprised and sickened by the many many MANY racist comments on this video, those of you who think black people are less intelligence really need to read up on the more recent studies which show the almost inumerable reasons why it looks that way. 247. James Badger

Throwing my comment into the void here:
The success of the human race following the stated positive sum theory this video is predicated on, requires more people being wealthy enough to educate themselves and their children, leading to technological innovation, as well as a better understanding of the perils of past wastefulness.
It’s not a repeat of the industrial revolution, but rather a sustainability revolution. It’s in the best interest of the world and humanity to have sustainability in every aspect. Sustainable transportation technology, manufacturing, agriculture, health care, national and international political relations and practices, international non-partisan collaboration between innovators, and a system which allows people to pursue the innovations they come up with, while also regulating potentially harmful advancements such as biological warfare agents, destructive computer viruses etc.
Overpopulation is not an issue as long as innovation is being made in regards to cultural changes in how people are going to live, how much food we can grow, and how many people will be too busy educating themselves to have children. Wealthy countries tend to have a lower birth rate because there’s no need to have 5+ children per household in order to survive, or have the children survive.
It’s an ideal which is in almost every way utopian, which is why it should both be strived for, and closely monitored and scrutinized. It’s easy to hide malicious inner working behind a pretty idea, but the idea is indeed pretty enough to be something we should all hope for the future.

And in case you’re wondering about any of a mulitude of issues arising from the people we see being corrupt and wealthy today, the solution is simple: Through education of the masses, you lessen the gap between the obscenely wealthy and the non-wealthy, essentially giving the former fewer means of accruing more wealth, and less power over non-wealthy people. It’s a race between those in power seeking to influence those below them, and those below them educating themselves in order to reduce the amount they can be influenced.

Those that believe this video, i admire your goodness. Now act on that wonderful notion. step 1 sell of all your assets: business, house, car and turn it onto money.
Step 2: find any willing and able Nigerian prince(should be easy) and transfer all your funds to him.
Step 3: wait for a return on that clever investment, surely your selfless act will be rewarded and that warm fuzzy feeling you feel is part of the reward.
Step 4: realize that the investment was a scam and since you literally gave away everything, you now are homeless, cold, and quite hungry or alternatively living on wellfare in an el cheapo dwelling eating el cheapo foods.
Step 5 if all of you mother theresas out there did this the wellfare system would not be able to cope with the sudden influx and thus only the cold reality of homelessness awaits you.
step 6 you lose, but fret not. somewhere far away a 3rd worldian is living the highlife with the funds you sent him was spent on arms he became a warlord that is robbing other nigerian princes out of their charity money.

  256. Alex

Hate to say it, but I completely disagree with the assumption that education means more useful production. A bunch of people I know who have gone into higher education didn’t become nasa engineers, or medical researchers. Those people went into high paying financial services jobs, or industries which directly support them, which involves managing rich peoples money for them. I would much rather they stayed uneducated and did something more useful. The cleanness of the streets or growing some exotic vegetables effects me personally, but financial services are the real waste of time, it neither provides a tangible goods or a service that effects more than a small percentage of the population.

I’d like to add one factor to this phenomenon. What about class and wealth difference? Now, is it a problem that the difference and “class distance” between the poorest person and the richest person on Earth is increasing due to this progress? I’m sure it helps that Elon Musk invests in a space program but there aren’t many like him I suppose, most of them invest in things that surely create progress but also enriched them more. I’m not criticising the video, I just need someone to explain me this.

  262. william polo valerio

5.7k who are trump followers dont like that.

  263. Jaquan Moore

Would it be possible to make an episode about animal agriculture and its effects on the world around us? I’ve seen a lot of research done especially in the documentary, “cowspiracy”. He stated that since the “demand” was high, many animals were used to feed the people investing in this way of life. So it would be enlightening on your input on the matter.

  264. San Yuisus

Zero sum game still a thing, bro.

  265. Dipper

    You german? lol

  266. SouthWestScott

*Well gee thanks for making me feel bad for being nice.*

  267. John Richardson

Kurzgesagt, please make a short video explaining the level of value that can safely be placed upon one of your videos as a source for a school project.
I think many of us would be extremely grateful.

  268. Transition21

Too many logical fallacy, but to take one example; The reason why there are not seven billion people to pay for healthcare is because wealth creates poverty, just as knowledge creates ignorance. Gates and Kurzgesagt are guilty of both here.

  269. Mubashshir Ali

@Kurzgesagt This time you made the video “kurz” (short) by showing only the glossy part of the argument as others have pointed out as well. I see the idea of medical research you’re trying to sell here funded Gates foundation but, I wonder if they wanted you to just show the one side of the coin? Normally, your content is deeper and well researched than this video.

  270. Lyquid

*_keeps saying pie but keeps showing cake_*

  271. techstepman

politicians should be forced to watch this vid.

  272. Elizabeth Li

This video makes me want to live

  273. poopxyz

“do you like being alive” is probably the creepiest question on earth..

  274. Fresnel Fringe

Yeah, people have calling that capitalism for decades now.

  275. Kautuka

    Ahaaa, something worth watching!

  276. Adz Mez

well finally! an optimistic video on this channel!

  277. Mason Dickerson

Dear Kurzgesagt team, thank you for your optimism and your reasonable approach to everything. In a world that often looks bleak, its good to see someone showing us that the world is a lot better than we think.

  278. sass demon66

” societies raided each other to get more pie” quote of the year

  279. Q99g

The problem with this is that it’s worth it in the long therm. And by long term I mean longer than an average life term.
For a selfish psycopath, it’s more worth it to deforest a big part of the Amazon rainforest and earn a few million dollars than help the cause explained in this video.

  280. Butter family Gaming and more

    How is this Selfish?

  281. Sonny Darvishzadeh

Sugar is the cause of cancer, sugar feeds the cancer, regardless of how many billion people invest in “finding a cure”. Sugar industry funded and still funds the research. The research papers you rely on to make videos. Your bare minimum, the only brick you stand on is funded by the “bad guys”.

    1. Prins van Oranje

Then don’t eat sugar. I still will.

  282. Molossus

This doesn’t take into consideration whether the hypothetical technological advancement of other countries is actually devoted for good purposes. We don’t know for sure if some nations might prioritize cancer cures or space travel instead of nuclear armament. Also, the evolutionary process of each nation and their eventual technological output is not the same; geographical and anthropological differences have been places countries afar.

  283. mor than 1 subscrivber

I wish they’d link the papers they always reference, I’d love to see them

  286. LuneTech

It would be nice if you published your videos in 4k.

  287. Steven Lee

You forget to mention that stolen resources from Africa & other colonised societies funded the boom in the British industrial age.

  288. Edric Boneham

    This makes sense.

  289. liopleurodon 155

Sure I want poor places to get richer. But these people must show an inner motivation to become richer as well. Foreign aid is contraproductive imo. Most of the money lands in the wallets of warlords, dictators, Boko Haram etc. Also, cut off clothes donations, because donated free clothes let the inner clothing economy collapse. Donate them to your local second hand shop instead & help out poor people in your country. *Stop foreign aid.* It does more damage than it helps. Let these countries develop on their own.

  290. G Dexter

I watched this with a growing sense of disbelief concerning all the issues that were being ignored. Add your own: resource depletion, finite earth, unchecked corporate greed, etc. Simplification is one thing; facile utopianism is another (and the patronizing tone doesnt help). Kurzgesagt have done a lot better than this.

  291. Bruno Chiminazzo

Do you give me permission to subtitle this video in Brazilian portuguese and distribute it in the country?

  292. Konrad Brennan

Make a video on when consciousness first came into existence

  293. Devavrath Tirukovela

    You can use Female voice.
    You know right.

  294. AllTheFreakingBacon

I know what the ulterior purpose of this video is lmao

  295. Tomozei Andrei

Make T-shirts and other merch. ?

  296. Respect the hobbyhorse now

You should do an episode on the American school system it’s very interesting

  297. Daniel Simanungkalit

Can you explain about the big bang and before it ?

    1. Daniel Simanungkalit

Hatty Hattington I would like to know about what happened before the big bang started

    2. Hatty Hattington

Daniel Simanungkalit I might be able to answer some of your questions! What would you like to know?

  298. Osprey Linders

Love this channel, keep up the good work guys

  299. J.Y. LI

The narrative in the film is a bit too wishful.
The characters in the film are more like talking about the country than the people.
The whole film talks about only the development of the good.
But ignoring the pollution and population problems.

The film lacks too many considerations to be too idealistic.
It’s hard to imagine that this theory can work in our present world.

    I wish I was wrong.
But it’s really unreal for me.
    It’s like I’m reading a fairy tale.

By the way my English is not very good.
I’m sorry if the whole sentence syntax and words are not used well.

  300. paper klep

You should release a video on how to pronounce your name 🙂

  301. rutiglianoweb

So why the trend world wide is to cut cost to education in developed countries ??? Who is running this agenda ?

  302. Hong Kong Phooey (w/ Eddy Murrphy)

Seems like a pretty strong argument against wealth consolidation.

  303. Elvar Snær Ágústson

    Wow

  304. Woomy Weapons Guy

Hey, it would be cool if you did a collab with life noggin, another fun educational YouTube channel that uses animation to teach

  305. Anonyme Anonyme

Bullshit economics. People who are born biologically inferior will not become smarter and useful just because you give them money. People will have to work more to produce things for them and get nothing in exchange. They will breed at a faster pace than other humans, and require even more welfare given to them, until there is a global collapse of the economy.

  306. OddSqodd

    I completely agree!

To help prove your point, please promote my channel.

    Thanks!

    1. BLAH BLAH BLAH

      OddSqodd No.

  307. Ice Cream Motion Studio

    cool..

  308. Daniel Yehoshua

the video makes me remember something Yuval Noah Harary wrote in one of his books

  309. Kra Z Kapin

Give pie to a chef and he can live longer, thus making more pie.
    Simple.

  310. Samuel Kerby

How dose this idea work for conservative factors such as profiteering for mitigating problems rather then solving them

  311. elpepe981

It’s just like Mr burns foundation sponsored this video of how can i be more productive and a good sheep for the progress of the mankind (alias multinationals) ???

  312. Filippo Scaioli

Awesome video, it shows a way of seeing the world even tooo advanced for our actual situation, still the best way possible.

  313. paras xdxdxd

    Guys what does kurgesgat means????

  314. Victor Magno

Imagine yourself on an island filled with diamonds. You can work hard to explore the diamonds, but with no one to buy they are worthless. Even if you sold, without having to spend the money, money is worthless. The only alternative is the attempt to survive, its richness will be food and its survival tools. Considerations:
    * Without the market (called pejoratively capitalism) there is no comfort and social welfare.
    * Money materializes the goods and social well-being of society, as written by Adam Smith in the wealth of nations.

The greatest enemy of innovation and development today is not selfishness. They are the democracies. All thriving countries live under the republican model, putting the law above popular interests. The problems of democracy is that those in power control the masses by delivering what they want. and not what they need. Creating a cycle of more rights and fewer and fewer duties. Every democratic government becomes an oligarchy even though it continues to adopt the name of democracy.
The attempt to interfere in these African oligarchies for example (dictatorships and regional militias) is always treated as imperialist.
But without freedom, it is impossible to have innovation and economic development.

  318. Real Movie King

Hi I’m joytishman please help me helium 3 is a neutral stuff ? I’m waiting for your answer and reply quickly

  319. S Godly

I somewhat trust you guys as a reliable source of information, please do a video on the truth of the dangers of 5G ???

    1. Hatty Hattington

S Godly ok. some of those are legitimate concerns, and are adressed in the mass surveliance video by kurzgesagt. however, the ‘radiation’ emitted by 5G mobile networks are radio waves, which are a form of light. they can’t harm you, and there are millions hitting your body right now. (they just pass through). all forms of light are radiation, but only incredibly high energies of light, (known as ionizing radiation) can damage your dna and cause cancers. hope this helps!

    2. S Godly

Hatty Hattington dangers involving the higher levels of radiation we will be subjected to from the new frequency, and because of how many transmitters there needs to be for the technology to work (4G needs a tower every 60 miles or so, 5G wavelengths are far shorter and so needs devices every 300 metres). Also curious of realistic applications for the technology, such as long distance remote control and override features on future vehicles, live surveillance and facial recognition, etc. I want the facts, but without the positive bias or negative sensationalism.

    3. Hatty Hattington

      S Godly What dangers?

  320. Валд В

Хорошее видео. Основная проблема современно мира заключается в монополистах которые из инноваторов превратились в паразитов-монополистов устанавливающих препятствия в развитии новых инноваторов.

Good video. The main problem of the modern world lies in the monopolists who, from innovators, have become parasites-monopolists, which set obstacles to the development of new innovators.

  321. George Kottakal

I disagree with this video. The world is still a zero-sum game. The industrial revolution took the raw materials from the “third-world”. Its just plunder and conquering in a different form.

  322. Syany ade

    viva capitalism!

  323. heri styono

Conquering, plundering, and stealing are still great strategies nowadays. Ask the americans.

  324. Daniel Morris

    Any Republicans learning?

  325. Warp Drive

If the world is a positive sum game why do politicians behave the way they do?

  326. Zestypanda

Just discovered his channel. RIP I am so sorry…

  327. Dreamlet

I love the message of the video! We should all move this world forward together.

  329. Amritraj chaudhary

    I want a new video

  330. Wolf Films

What would happen if you suddenly lost all your DNA?

    1. Aleksy The Pony

      Short answer: You would die.

Longer answer: You body would be unable of synthesisation of any protein. Our metabolism depends on many of this proteins and we would stop functioning if we would lost our ability to produce them.

  331. Mike the Philosopher

This video should be shared with all republicans ?

  332. Sue Young

    COMMUNISM!!

  333. Tree

damn i feel bad for that bird

  334. iamNikit

Get well, Philip. Your work is an inspiration.

  335. Sandra costa torrano

where is the speaker from? America or Great Britain?

  336. Max

I would love to discuss with one of you guys, it’s interesting how you always see the things from different perspectives, I also like your animation style and the speaker,

Also kurzgesagt: I love you guys!!

  337. dt28469

HOWEVER, the nature of economic growth is fundamentally unsustainable. We are ultimately at the limits of our environment. All forms of growth require exponential resource consumption. The natural order of things is stasis. We aren’t growing the pie, were merely borrowing slices from future generations.

  338. Curiosity Ridge

Great video! And i love the Wilhelm scream ;’)

  339. MegaMementoMori

There is one problem with this theory – some resources don’t grow with the rest of the pie. The best example would be land. We could have more food and technology, but as population grows and poor people become richer, land is more scarce then it was ever before. Back in the middle ages, the a moderately rich member of the 1% could have whole villages, forests and fields to his name – now if somebody has a private golf course he is considered awesomely wealthy. Not to mention the scramble for rare earth metals…

    1. Hatty Hattington

MegaMementoMori 🙂 Thank you for being open minded.

    2. MegaMementoMori

Good points! Yeath, this could actually work 🙂

    3. Hatty Hattington

MegaMementoMori What about inter-planetary colonization, or simply building things? Either way, you increase the total usable surface area of the earth, so you create more land. (Also, rare earth metals can be mined from asteroids!)

  340. TJ Lamb

I wish everyone had this way of thinking. Most of the worlds money is held by a small percent. Why can’t we all be equal. I’ll tell you why, it’s because any system out there will be exploited and you will always have the same problem no matter the formula.

  341. Jakub Wojciechowski

That’s why we should spread cheap, strong and multilingual internet absolutly verywhere in the world. If we all become connect, we will be able not only to developt poor nations faster, but also make them to create new forms of art, science and other stuff, which they can’t right now.

  342. Matthew Bay

A video brought to you by bill gates and his wife, gates foundation, we made a foundation to look less greedy when in fact we are the most rich AND monopolistic tech entrepreneurs of current time. Kurzgesagt you failed. You are now even making videos of extreme capitalists or AKA american devils

  343. Stroffello

Liked the video and thought it was well researched, but it’s ignorant to believe the zero sum world we’ve lived in since life began is gone because we have plenty today. We live in a bubble that won’t last. The question now remains: who will be on top after all the domino’s fall

  344. coconut oil

I urge everyone to look at the music for this video it is very underrated.
He has a link in the description for the music if you are interested.

  345. Cao Vinh Hoàng

Sorry, i cant speak English, so i will comment by my mother language.

  346. Dawid L

This would require that the smart people would need stay in developing places so those places could develop. Not being shipped to already developed countries. The poor places are not poor because they have no money. They are poor because smart people leaving them as soon as they have opportunity. I missed the darker side of the story in this video. Its not the usual objective thing.

  347. Britty Brad

You said pie when it was clearly cake lol

  348. Anindya Mitra

There are no bloody captions showing..so what’s the deal with thanking people for captions??

  349. Peter C. F.

I agree fully with the video but I think this idea fails with the fact that the earths resources would be depleted almost instanteneously or at least much quicker than they already are. How do you solve that problem?

  350. DudeAboveMeIs Gay

I am saddened to hear you have cancer. I pray for your recovery.

  351. Trương Duy Khang Lê

Make a video about 2 black hole stuck together

  352. Jay Kay

Dude!! That’s what I’ve been saying

  353. Designed Hoover

How about an animation video about how bacteria’s and viruses give us different symptoms?

  354. Gabriel Jarrosson

    Brilliant!

  355. Nerko

This is one of the best Kurzgesagt videos so far!

  356. Alex Lopez

    Long life to capitalism

  357. NIGHTMARE FOXY

Can a black hole eat its mass when the black hole eat the universe? Pls answer

    1. Hatty Hattington

NIGHTMARE FOXY no, thats not how a black hole works. Read about hawking radiation.

  358. Quantum Crab

Can you do a video on net neutrality?

  359. AlbinoMunkay13

Problem is too many people think they are entitled to the pie, but feel they shouldn’t have to contribute. Good theory for a “perfect world”, unfortunately we’re far from that. Seems everyone has an excuse nowadays.

  360. Ellani

uuuh pretty sure that’s a cake ? not a pie ? but go off

  361. Jade Prince

Don’t cure cancer because that’s one of the little things that try to reduce the population and keep it balanced. Lethal infections and disabilities and such try to keep humans from overpopulating the planet even more which is good

    1. Guigui M

The founder of Kurzgesagt actually has cancer and announced it today…

    2. fele felix

Jade Prince they did a video about overpopulation I recommend you watching it. This sounds awkward but the creator of this channel (Phillipp) just wrote to the patreon backers that he has cancer and because of that there will be less videos in the next 3-5 months…

  362. Cuzeg Spiked

Sadly this likely wont happen because corporations dont want africa and other places to be better off for resources and profit. They dont think about innovation, they steal from others who do innovate and it seems counter intuitive of them. Same with certain governments and many wars. We gotta change the state of the world to inspire more innovators.

*COUGH COUGH APPLE, goofle , every big corporation* , *slavery, wars, communism, charity that gives money to dictators, etc. America is no saint either, the mega corporations will do bad business practises that end up overworking people and making their mental health go bad just for the sake of mass producion and capitalism. Well communism is worse and capitalism seems better than the corporatism that is happening with mega corporations anf monopolies with less competition and less innovations. It seems that even if people have good intentions, it is a road to hell.

I have already almost lost faith on humanity though and i dont see any sign of that changing but I stil have hope.

  363. HighFuture14

Very communistic (Jewish) philosophy. I can supposedly only have more by making someone else have less… it makes no sense.

    1. Graknorke

Lol hello there obligatory Nazi how’s it going. Did you even watch the video, dudes a liberal shill advocating for trickle down economics, about as non communist as you can get without crowning a monarch.

  364. Marci Nelson

    *Yes, exactly!*
    ?????

  365. Lore

We live in a positive sum world, yet despite there being more of the pie for everyone people around the world are dying from homelessness and starvation….why? Because we’re still living by the rules of the old days, people are still plundering, waging war, and stealing the wealth for themselves. The economic equality is even worse now, if we really want to make the world a better place for everyone we need to end imperialism and capitalism :^)

    1. wesson smith

Lore We also need to end human nature, good luck with that.

  366. Kurt Coleman

Increasing GDP does not automatically translate in to making the world a better place.

    1. Graknorke

Yeah but it does make the world a better place for some. And if you notice who sponsored the video it’ll start to add up a bit.

  367. Jake Bowling

Sad that we have to advance the self interested model to get some people to be altruistic- but then again, better we do that than nothing!

  368. TheTanso

this is all awesome but wouldn’t they not make a cure for cancer even if everyone said make it I there is more money to be made in billing someone every 5 seconds their last days alive instead of curing them and getting not as much money

  369. Zi Long Zuo

this channel is making a video about the most common notion of capitalism driven incentives, rolling eyes…

  370. Doxie Lain

As long as we don’t crash the bioshpere

  371. Diego Cervantes

This cannot have a chance of working without some measure of population control.

  372. Matthew

This clip is shit for one reason.
We do not live in a positive sum game.

    Innovation?
Ask Tesla about that… ouh no.. they killed him…

Electricity, a force that is literally everywhere in the universe and can be harvested FREELY with the proper tools.

Please do tell me how we’re all better off…

    What a crock of shit.

    1. Graknorke

You know that Tesla never said you could get energy from nothing right. His thing about free electricity was free in terms of you couldn’t be made to pay for it, not free energy in the physical sense.

  373. LaQuient

    “might”, “would”, “could” & “maybe”
It’s a fact that the exact opposite things is will take place in this video, considering how cruel and rotten this planet actually is.

  374. v1060058

What would happen if we created our own meals without the use of any cell or living being???

  375. Michael Wassef

The argument in this video is extremely simplistic. It ignores the obvious fact that the industrial revolution, while improving the lives of millions, also led to the worst and bloodiest conflicts in history like WWI and WWII as well as more savage colonialism and exploitation of people. It ignores the obvious strain on the environment that increasing people’s prosperity comes with . A huge increase in demand for food, energy, and water creates even more pollution and conflicts. It only focuses on the positive aspects of spreading prosperity

    1. Maya A

Actually most colonization happened waaaaay before the industrial revolution… the Americas, the whole of Africa, etc. Also, bloodiest conflicts in history? Maybe short term, but things like the crusades happened.. if anything the industrial revolution has lowered the amount of death and fighting

    2. Admiral Bonnso

Ironic considering this channel has been called communists on many other videos, you can’t please everyone.

    3. henryefry

WWI happened because of nationalism not industrial revolution which happened 100 years earlier

  376. ПаШа Римир

Im all for making thing better, but where was the egoistic counterargument?

  377. Burak Korkmaz

I thought I heard The Rains of Castamere at 0.30 😀 Logical though, it is relevant 😀

  378. Jacob Rosiello

Not sure if this is how it goes “in a nutshell”. It is thinking positively though. Also, there are a lot of innovations that have led to the devaluing of nutrition, which devalues one’s immune system, which does weigh in on whether you will become higher risk to developing a cancer that your body cannot fight off. Innovation for absurdly large cakes is not good for everyone in the long game. It’s the reason why certain innovations especially drugs only have a good reputation after 10+ years of being on the market. Etc. etc. etc.

  379. Josiah Junkin

I’m not wholly convinced that the world was even always stuck in a zero sum game before the Ind. Rev., but nonetheless this vid presents a good argument

  380. physic smith

    Which app

  381. physic smith

Which do u use to do this animation

  382. Mysteriastic Magically

If people were not greedy haha the world will be 100% different now. No guns no threats more jobs lesser population probably is the only way to develop 200% faster

  383. Holly Louise

The beginning premise of one-sized pie does not make sense because much of the planet’s land was not even populated yet, let alone farmed, therefore the pie was NOT fixed for thousands of years. But, will keep listening to see where this goes. . . .

    1. Holly Louise

And where it goes, does make sense and is a core idea for american conservatism which involves helping people to help themselves.

  384. redskiez

    “Do you like being alive?”
    No.

  385. Niveedita Deshpande

Can you please make a video on different types of matter??
    I love your video!!

  386. Filipino Mapper

Kurzgesagt always thinks in the best way…..
And this is one of my most favourite vids in a long time.

  387. kuşburnuların tanrısı

  389. james mandeville

can you make a video about the multiverse next?

  390. seven secular sultans

The animal kingdom is meant to have smaller populations by body size. When you halt natural selection, species with bad traits don’t die off. Then you got me. Dammit…….

  391. Derek Wolford

    These concepts are elementary

  392. Santiago Selva

Did they said that if we all have cancer then we will find the cure? Sounds like a good business ??

  393. Silver Maximoff

    I WANT PIE

  394. Alex Danzer

Don’t tell us. We have no say in this matter.
The people in power (governments, politicians, corporations) who actually could change the world only care about getting richer while keeping the poor poor, it always has been that way and always will be. Fuck this world

If the research output of humanity would be many times what it is now, wouldn’t that mean that African warlords would have access to nukes? Wouldn’t that mean that nation states like North Korea would gain access to more advanced weaponry? Humanity is not all on a team if you haven’t noticed. This sounds great but it ignores human nature.

If the poor population of the 3rd world gets richer (billions of people), then they will all want to consume more and have cars etc.. The Earth’s ecosystem would fuckin collapse under the added pressure!!!… It would be unsustainable. Economic growth for forever on a single planet civilization is a delusion. Its pretty close now for a zero sum game again just like old days.

I am pretty sure building a single new school in Africa will lead to MUCH better results than giving them such a massive amount of help in food and medicine and so on. Food and medicine are important, because without them you lose the resource called “humans”, but without education, even if you have that resource – you waste it. And a wasted resource becomes double trouble.
Building solar plants for free for the people who suddenly decide to break them, cuz the “divine spirits told them to” (you can even find videos of it) in the end is a double loss. It turns out not giving them the plants is better for everyone? The truth is – none of the help we currently provide will help without better education. And I really, really, REALLY don’t want to believe in, but I do have a dark feeling inside, that most of them will fiercely reject in the beginning as well.

This is the very definition of capitalism, supply and demand, innovation, personal reward and powers every successful economy. Too bad it totally misses the inherent limitations: limited resources (land, water, ….), lazy people, and just plain greed. In case you missed it many leaders are sociopaths so they are only looking out for their own interests, they will screw over everyone to gain that extra dollar.

More capitalism and “free market” won’t solve the problems of the actual capitalism, in fact, those problems were firstly created by the capitalism itself.

  429. OumDead

I find the arguments exposed in the video naive and in the end not really convincing. The idea of zero-sum game and positive sum game society seems kind of questionable. I know it is a concept from game theory, but is this something really used in economics or sociology? Anyway, here are some of my objections
    1. It seems that you could argue that modern economy will eventually evolve to a zero sum game. The clearest reason being that resources on the planet are limited. We have temporarily been able to sustain economic growth building on the power harnessed from coal and oil, but this will not last forever. Even renewable resources are intrinsically limited in supply. So the “cake” will not keep growing forever, or at least not as fast as it did before. Most economists agree on this I think.
    2. A lot is thrown under the carpet with the concept of “being better off” Do things like being part of a rich culture, having meaningful relationships with other people, etc ( immaterial things one can value in life) counts towards “being better off”? I think it should certainly be the case. Then preindustrial societies are far from zero-sum games and people in “underdeveloped” countries are not that poor. It seems that in these societies, there are even mechanism that diminish productivity in favour of immaterial goods (think about the prohibition of work on sundays for example).
    3. It is explicitly said in the video that we tend to desire for more even when we get what we want. This is obviously enhanced in our modern societies. Why presuppose that we should just let this logic continue in an increasing way? Is it that crazy to be satisfied with what you have?
    4. From an entirely selfish point of view, I want the indian worker’s salary to be as low as possible because any increase in his wage will be reflected on the price of my goods. It seems much more rational to stick to this logic rather than speculating about this guy’s children maybe going to college in 10 years, and maybe becoming scientists in 20 years and maybe finding the cure to cancer in 50 years.

    That doesn’t logically follow.

Attend; If one woman can have a child in nine months, nine women don’t have a child in one month.

The question is not ‘should we help the poor?’ but rather ‘how do we help the poor?’

I don’t think anyone is disagreeing on helping those less fortunate but if we are going to help them by hurting the successful then that is a big no. Bringing in businesses and charities will help prop them up, if countries have to tax their citizens to oblivion to help someone else then that will lead to chaos.

I dunno, I think selflessness has always been beneficial to the self, even before the industrial revolution. Because if someone practices self-abnegation for the sake of others, if they help others survive, then they’re valuable to the community The people around them are more likely to help them out in return, because they want to be able to continue to rely on that person. Like, I think communes can work IF they’re necessary for survival, if there’s no alternative. In that kind of situation, someone who does the work they’re supposed to do and provides for the community is valuable; someone who’s lazy and only takes from others isn’t, and will probably be punished or ostracized from the community. After all, it’s no coincidence that humans are such social animals; our interdependence on one another has been key to our survival and success. Of course, there are limits to this– people do take advantage, and it probably only works that way on an inter-personal level. After all, humans generally think in terms of “us” and “them,” because… Well, our time and our minds are limited, so we can’t get achieve intimate knowledge of everyone we meet. It benefits us to surround ourselves with people we trust based on experience and knowledge, and to not trust new people so much. At least, that’s true in a survival situation. But the easier life is, the less beneficial that instinct becomes. It’s like how, in the stock market, if a stock crashes, it only becomes worse if everyone pulls their money out. Everyone knows this– yet people don’t trust each other to stay in. And when everyone else pulls out, the few who stay in really do lose the most; everyone wants to avoid that, so it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

  445. Jim H

Hey Kurzgesagt, could you do a video on Communism and why it would/wouldn’t work in a “western” country please?

  446. Ashley Mills

The content of the video may be true, but it plays more like a plea for charities rather than an informational video.
I have no issue with this in itself. However the main issue I have is with the graph depicting of the distribution of wealth.

That’s why a few billion people donating would be insignificant, even if they contributed 1% of their wealth the 10 richest people could match it from their 1% alone. Despite his contributions to the Bill & Melinda Gates foundation, Bill Gates wealth has only continued to increase.

amazing video! I want to stay on something… the part that you mentioned that the faster we grow to a possitive sum society the more benefitial for each one individually is actually quite true! Although we think that the philosophy is “the strong one kills the weak one” (and now that i m thinking of it in another way, one reason potentially is the historical one that you mentioned), this is WRONG! But societies are also in some kind keeping that philosophy! Actually, due to action and reaction you cannot make harm and take benefit back! you get exactly what you give, the problem is actually that you dont understand it (not you personally i’m talking generally)
in conclusion that thing you mentioned is true and i REALLY admired that you closed the video with this!

This really has nothing to do with Egoism though, huh?

  455. Piotr Kasznia

    Soo… Communism?

  456. Maciej Różański

First part stinks of bullshit, there were wealthy places with lack of good soil for farming that operated mostly on trade or other means and very poor places with large amount of good soil, wars and conquest were also very often caused by ambition, culture, religion, personal reasons and there are alot more reasons why what is said in video is simply not true. Obviously economic growth was low in times where there was barely any technological progress but it was not zero, because people still could learn to make certain things more productive by other means than technological, simply increasing population was enaugh to make more farms and more profit out of them, barrier of maximum food production was never reached in Europe i believe, and if it was in some places it was insignificant in long run, simple fact that forests even existed at this time is proof of that, building roads could increase productivity, changing policies like giving peasants their private land, increasing education and alot more.

And as i said before there are first world countries right now that have very low (and constantly falling) economical growth because of low birth ratess and poor political choices of their leaders, to think that middle age European countries could develop their economies faster than the ones in todays world says alot, black death wiped out half of Europe population, yet after it ended economical boom made countries on edge of total fall wealthy again.

I have feeling like creators of this video took some information they liked for their thesis and threw away everything that did not fit, dont take it like something serious, its halftruth bullshit.

Oh, and age of conquests and wars ended not because of reasons you presented but because we have weapons of mass destruction every sane person (even politicians) is afraid to use, this whole progress bullshit that has been told did not stopped both world wars and alot of other concflicts didnt it?

I am just s imple physcal worker yet i put more effort to read about history than you to preach this disinformation to 3 milion people, this is just horrible.

Besides a great part of the argument about demand and the size of the pie seems correct, it is very naive to not consider many people are interested in not finding a cure for cancers.
If cancers are finally cured, what will be the disease that will finance the whole pharmachemical industry ?
Or: what will be there to be stolen from the sum pie ?
ALthough it kills and enprisions in a more indirect, less bloodly way, inequality still drives the game for power.

  470. Dogentic

  471. zeleni sok

The market framing of innovation in this video is bad. All substantive technological progress came out of the non-market sector. R&D is a long-term and high-risk investment, and you cant afford such investing if you need to worry about being outcompeted. Take as one example Ma Bell, they invented transistors, modern cryptography, solar cells, the laser, the C programming language, and mobile phones; but when the monopoly was broken up, Bell Labs was sold off to Alcatel-Lucent, after a few years they announced they were cutting all funding for basic research to focus on more immediately profitable applications. The computer, mouse, Internet, digital camera, and email, radar, the jet engine, satellites, fiber optics, artificial limbs, nuclear energy, etc, etc, that all came from the state sector. Technological progress requires socialization of risk and investment.

Also, people can innovate simply bc its good for oneself and others to innovate. No one acts entirely selfishly, everyone thinks altruism is good. Basically everyone will agree that society should function with everyone’s interests in mind, not only in the interest of a some subset of the populace. So, we should organize society so that innovation is invested in, and that everyone is well off.

Note that this doesnt even require radical change of the system, only a system something like the west already had between thirties and seventies. Although we are basically on the verge of automating the economy anyways, so some kind of radical change of the system will be necessary lol..

    1. Thunder Lightning

That’s so wrong even on a Government level. Need tanks for our Military? Call General Dynamics, need planes? Lockheed Martin. Need Roads built? call the contractors. What Socialists don’t understand is that people are motivated by $$$$$$ and that’s not a bad thing!

    2. chronok

The essence of crony capitalism is to make money AND to give people services and products (technology).. you’re basically hinting that people don’t have any benefits from technological progress which is BS. Also maybe you don’t understand but the science at the beginning of the 20th century was much much cheaper (yes even when you take inflation into account) as all of the inventions were easy to do – it’s referred to low hanging fruit. Nowadays it takes billions and billions in R&D costs to produce a new CPU/GPU (Nvidia, Intel, AMD – their budgets are insanely high for R&D), it takes billions of private money to come up with new safe drugs as all of the easy ones were found 80 years ago by average chemists. You are totally deluded.. by your own account USSR and Peoples republic of China should have been the hotbeds for innovation and heaven for people to live in … but the contrary is true.. they lived far less longer lives and enjoyed no advanced technology and came up with little innovation and scientific knowledge. Science for science sake without billions of capitalist money to fund it? Lol you are so naive and deluded.. you should go to Sony and propose science for science sake to make new sensors for photography.. lol we’ll see how that will go.

    3. zeleni sok

You are confusing investments with profits. Socialization of risk and investment is usually coupled with privatization of profits, thats the essence of crony capitalism. Bell labs was in the state sector. Once they stopped being, they stopped with any substantive R&D.

Also economic value isnt produced by capitalism (or socialism or feudalism or whatever), its produced by labor and technology, the -ism just determines who is the boss/owner and gets the profits.

Technological progress should be for the sake of people instead of for the sake of profits of the few.

    4. chronok

All substantive technological progress came out of the non-market sector? Uh? Bell labs was funded by capitalists makign money off consumers.. so really? Wtf? Even in communist russia they tried to monetize on the science as it’s the right thing to do. You’re painting a very incomplete picture of how R&D actually happens.. even the pure scientific world is capitalistic as to say.. companies pay for research PhD programs, and the government pays for science out of taxes that were gathered from a capitalist market functioning. There is zero “science for the sake fo science” or “innovation for the sake of innovation” in this world.

you guys have lost my subscription, you’ll are infecting your videos with your political views, a 5 year old can tell you’ll are probably a bunch of SJWs and lefties… way to force your opinions on your audience, mixed with your science videos so it seems like its the unbiased truth… disgusting.
I’m talking about the hints at developing poor countries and the refugee video etc… you know it…

    1. The Forehead

pizzaslovetoppings dude what are you talking about how is this in anyway leftist number 1 it said the industrial revolution was a good thing. What leftist ever says that. Number 2 it is saying we should make more countries capitalist. Number 3 how is this SJW .

  484. Kevin Shah

Seriously, this should be thought in school to everyone.

  485. Ja Jose

soooooo we just leave out how the industrial age used slavery as a means of progress and changed nothing of the way of disestablishing countries?

  489. Raheem Reid

This is hilarious because this is basically a case for globalism. But I promise you if it was titled that or delivered any other way, people would be crying about how this channel is liberal, SJW, communist, Marxist, blah, blah, blah. It literally had to be explained with colorful animations and birds to get people on board with the simple idea that “if everyone does well, I personally benefit from that”. That’s fucking insane to me.

Now what if 7billion people invested in the cure for cancer, it’s discovered but the individuals who discovered the cure keep it to themselves parading to not have said cure simply so that 7billion can keep giving money to said individuals making a hidden profit off the unknowing masses but providing the service to individuals with exorbitant amounts of wealth. *DUN DUN DUUUUUUN*

  492. Luigikart222

But what if they didn’t want to help you specifically? Would you still help them? What if they hard-work wasn’t aimed in the least for you? What if they had a will which wasn’t compatible with yours? What if their intentions were to take away a big sum of your pie to give it away to those who don’t have pie at all?

  493. Sweet Potato, BEST POTATO!!!

Ehh…idk what to feel. This video makes it seem like things are way easier than they actually are. How will we have so many workers to keep up with demand?? How will we feed them, give them all stable working conditions and at the same time make them want to continue working on the job?? Third world countries can’t grow to be this huge out of nowhere, there needs to be a lot of time, and things certainly won’t be easy. We can’t simply expect people to go to school, work at a factory and become amazing contributing workers. Sure, maybe this reality will happen in the long, distant future, but certainly not anytime too soon. I agree with what the video is saying but just like most great things, it certainly won’t be easy. We all need to strive our best to make this reality a possibility!!!!!!!!!!

  495. Pablo Fuentes

I don’t know if this is too dumb of a question but is it realistically possible to end poverty or reduce it in a large scale? If everybody was better off by today’s standards, then wouldn’t the poverty line move up as well? As future societies would create new basic necessities. For example, Internet access is still considered a luxury in less developed places in the world, but by the time we reach universal accessibility, Internet access would lose its intrinsic value, since it would be so available that new “luxuries” would created thus confining people under the poverty line even though they made progress overtime. I would like somebody to clarify this to me or recommend me some more information on the subject.

  496. Twins Soul

this channel make videos and all of them make so much sense than what our president is doing…………. Pls dont come for me Donald Trump!!!!!

  497. AlexReynard

And this is why I’m a cheerleader for capitalism, no matter how many people scream that it’s the ultimate evil.

    1. EternalHappElements

AlexReynard for the same reason, one can cheer for communism. the demand of the mass is selfdriven, while the supply is driven by demand. Does that makes us both populists? lets throw away communism and capitalism out of window now.

  498. PuffyBudgerigar

    Sooooo good

  499. Ahmadali Afkhami

You just explained the defected loop of CAPITALISM, and came up with the most hilarious conclusion possible!
If poor people get rich, then the world would be a better place for you (rich ones) as well!
The CAPITALISM ( which I believe is the worst thing that has happened to human beings) is breaking a part, because the rich are getting richer and poor getting poorer… This won’t continue of course, since when the 99% of the world become really poor, there’s nobody left to fill the pockets of those 1%…
Sad part however is, why all the achievements of humanity needs money?! What is money? (No going to get into it here) the truth is; humanity somewhere in its path, choose the most inhumane concept for insensitive and that was money and then was the birthday of capitalism. Think about it, the laws of physics, the existence of chemistry, the capability of reaching the moon and …. Would be different if there was no money? The power of human brain and its capabilities would be different if there was no money? We are going down, and this time we are going down hard!

    1. Anonyme Anonyme

Nah, I’m speaking to the socialist piece of utter crap that lives in a capitalist country being the usual social parasite their ilk is by stopping people from becoming richer whereas they don’t mind money as long as it’s in THEIR pockets. Proof: Weinstein who gave a lot of money to Obama and Clinton. Don’t bother arguing with them, they’re just failures at life who feel angst and need to believe it’s unfair otherwise they cannot live with their pathetic selves.

    2. Anonyme Anonyme

A spoiled kid that should be left to die and his resources taken to be given to someone more worthy, that’s what you are.

    3. Nickylp

Ahmadali Afkhami I was born and grew up in a socialist country. While I love my country and certainly miss it, I’m glad I moved to Canada. The fact is, my country (Venezuela) was once a capitalist nation and it was growing economically at an impressive rate. Then socialism came and ruined everything, nowadays Venezuela is one of the poorest nations in the world despite it having massive oil reserves. People are straving in my country ever since socialism was introduced to it, and to think that I’ve heard some people talking about how they wished they lived in a socialist country AND have used Venezuela as an example… If only they knew the truth.

    4. Brian A

‘would it be different if there was no money?’- yes, yes it would

    5. The Forehead

Ahmadali Afkhami What I am saying is capitalism expands these innovations faster and farther when they expand people have better lives and corporations grow when corporations grow they have more money to invest more money to invest on people who are better off so can think more with more investment and technology because of that investment people are able to expand on already existing technology. Also constant competition means companies have to improve on these innovations with fear of going out of buissness. Under socialism there is no need to market anything. There is less incentives to work and no price signals based on supply and demand curves meaning wacky prices on goods and services.

  500. SamuraiMath

BUT the supply of resources is not infinite, money not infinite, jobs are limited, the demand on the market is not infinite too. How can we “contribute to a better socieny” when there are simply not enough demand ?? Lots of people sit without a jobs. And you can’t just print money and give them because of inflation that will go crazy.

  509. Metalbear

So basically capitalism is doomed to fail/hold us back. Capitalism promotes old fashioned barbaric greed. That is if we apply what you have told us in the video. I personally gave up on anything getting any better in the east. I still enjoy my HUGE WINTER SNOW on the march, and the hot decembers…

Hint: Decembers used to be heavy snow before 15+ years ago. You do the math!

  510. Guillaume

Think of it like this: before the industrial revolution, the world was split into lots of pies, but since the advent of fast transport, the entire world is interlinked and is hence one great pie

  511. InsidethePipeEntertainment

Okay, we have reasons for the selfish to end poverty… But what about methods? Do we know or theorize on how to actually end poverty or try, at least?

  527. john smith

it amuses me endlessly how people still trump out on how med-evil times had ginormous disparencies between the richest and poorest people, while in fact today’s gap between the two is order of magnitudes bigger…

    1. Nash Thrashington

john smith There are some caveats to that though. Surely you’d rather live in current times than in medieval times. Poor people of today are overweight because they can’t afford healthier food options, but poor people from hundreds of years ago were starving to death. Which is worse? At least where I’m from (Canada) there are lots of people on welfare and disability, and they have a bed to sleep in every night, plenty of food to eat, own cell phones and TVs and video games, have access to Internet, and don’t even have to work. These people have it better than the ROYALTY and WEALTHIEST people of the past, let alone the peasants. To compare now and then is a complete joke. Yeah there might technically be a greater divide, it doesn’t really matter. I’m technically poor, but I live a life of luxury compared to pretty much everyone throughout human history. And yeah I know there are legitimately people who are homeless or work really hard for meager pay, and that’s unfortunate, but even they have it better than the poor people of medieval times.

    2. ErubielThePreacher_Jw Witness

      john smith Very true.

  528. elton forlemu

If only innovation brought societies together so easily. A very optimistic video that never mentions all the alter joe motives and beliefs that set societies apart.

  529. Nox

This comes with the assumption that everyone is willing to work as a collective (globally) to achieve the goals listed therein. Most people would prefer to keep the achievement for their own legacy and are more than happy producing the amount of “pie” they do while others make next to nothing. People aren’t concerned with innovation unless it’s directly critical to their survival, in which case they’ve likely already spent their life’s savings on treatments for their health to make the rich even more rich than they already are. Too many optimistic presumptions in this video.

  531. wrath of the lamb

*learn human beings. They are evil. Some of them are quite happy to dominate others. They need people to be less than them in order to satisfy their desires of superiority. They have a sick greedy desperate need, which they think is a right, to gorge themselves on a value system of supreme grandiosity. All of human history encompasses this story of war. Nobody wants to be the filthy heroin addict in and out of prison, homeless like a walking skeleton. But there are those who need trash people to exist. It glorifies their own sense of goodness, rightfulness, value and worth. You live in a world that is built by design to MAKE enemies. This is intentional. See the happiest, most successful people in the world for what they are. And know this, land of stars and celebrities: the first commandment forbids idolatry.*

  536. A Keskin

Money is just a perception and can be produced virtually infinitely, only reason its not is, because the ones who control the money supply wants in that way so that they can create a zero sum economy and their wealth does not detoriate. If what you said in this video was true we wouldn’t have poor people that cant access to clean water. However theoretically its possible to have what you have shown, its just greedy, selfish, bigoted politicians blocking the way.

  545. kebman

The assumption is of course that we are really living in a positive sum world. What if we’re not? There are many indications on it, like the Petro-Yuan vs Petro-Dollar, and how Russia is a destabilising factor in world politics. Obviously they make up a block competing for the same goods as “The West”. Only when you put forces like that up against each other, the war for resources will be way more momentous than you can ever imagine. It is truly world-ending powers, we are talking about here. You didn’t talk about how when small-scale wars happened in the past, they diminished the population on _both_ sides of the conflict. Even if a war ended in a tie, it would still be beneficial, as resources will still be more bountiful afterwards, possibly leading to a golden age.

  546. kebman

But instead of going to the poor countries and innovating, the leaders that be, chose to invite poor people into the rich domains – en mass. This is only great for the elites of that domain, and horribly bad for all the others, including the immigrants, who automatically become the new underclass.

tl;dr: We need to go to Africa and other poor places and help democracy and innovation.

    1. kebman

Spoken like a true globalist. It’s not competition, when the guys are lured there with benefits taken from the tax money of the people. Then it’s not just theft, it’s treason. And this kind of treason has only _one_ sentence.

    2. aR0ttenBANANA96

If you can’t defend yourself against that type of competition you’re not worth protecting anyways lol

    3. kebman

It only bloats socialism, and stunts personal growth, and not least personal _agency_ on a monumental level. Counter-intuitively, socialism just makes you into a lethargic consumer, and you are never in control of your own fate, except perhaps when choosing your employer, or hoping to out-compete your fellow man for grades and university grades. That’s not real competition. It only serves to secure the position of the elites, who can sit un-contested on their economically high horses. Ironically, this means that progress is much slower than it needs to be, since ideas aren’t allowed to really compete. So how do we fight this? With more market liberalism, of course! And by letting countries protect their damn borders.

    4. kebman

My life has not improved with immigration. It has only lead to me not being able to get an apartment – let alone a _house_ – of my own, because it has kept housing prices sky-rocketing. Meanwhile bankers has cashed in, and factory owners has cashed in on cheap labour keeping wages low, and real-estate owners has also cashed in. Everybody else have been left in the dust.

  547. Manfred Gesink

first off i think, that zipf´s law could be a dealbreaker and/or real selfish greed.
societies don´t change their values very fast, thei are stuck in a bit of tradition, and therefore traditional ways of thinking.
of course you could argue that the positive world made more room for education and therefore the bigger political changes in the past 100-200 years, but to be honest, you don´t have to be a pessimist to see how far we have to go yet in our altroistic development.

  548. kebman

I thought “Norway” before you said “Norway”. Spot on, folks!
